Defending MAC champs will face Kentucky, Denver and Illinois among nonleague foes
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A challenging schedule awaits the Central Michigan gymnastics team as it begins defense of its dual Mid-American Conference titles.
The Chippewas open the 2019 campaign on Jan. 6 with a home quad in which Illinois, Arizona and Bridgeport will visit McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas' nonconference slate includes a home-and-home with Illinois State, a quad at Denver, and a trip into Southeastern Conference country when they visit Kentucky.
CMU begins defense of its MAC regular-season title in late January when it takes on rival Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. CMU will go head-to-head with MAC foes Kent State and Ball State on the road, and will entertain Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois at McGuirk Arena.
CMU will defend its crown at the MAC Championships on March 23 in DeKalb, Ill.
The nonconference portion of CMU's schedule features several challenging opponents:
• Kentucky finished the 2018 season as one of 12 teams in the NCAA Championships. The Wildcats, who were ranked eighth in the final 2018 poll, placed fourth in the SEC Championships and second in the NCAA Regional at Minneapolis.
• Illinois placed third in the Big Ten and third in the NCAA Regional at Tuscaloosa, Ala. (the same regional in which CMU participated) and was ranked 19th at the end of the '18 regular season.
• Denver placed second a year ago at the Big 12 Championships, was ranked 15th in the final regular-season poll, and placed third finished last season ranked 15th, placed second in the Big 12 Championships, and placed third in the NCAA Regional in Minneapolis.
