CMU closes the season on Saturday at Western Michigan
DeKALB, Ill. – The Central Michigan volleyball team suffered its worst hitting night in a month on Friday in falling in five sets to Northern Illinois in a Mid-American Conference match.
CMU committed a season-high 39 attack errors as the Huskies posted a 25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory. CMU is 7-20, 4-11 MAC. The Chippewas close the season at rival Western Michigan on Saturday (7 p.m.).
"We got blocked 21 times and that's an incredibly high number," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "It's a byproduct of not giving our setters enough options. I thought we got a little careless at times. We wanted to be aggressive, and I thought we didn't walk the line enough between being careless and aggressive.
"We were in the fight, we were right there in the thick of the match, but we've got to close it out in four (sets). And we had a chance to redeem ourselves in set five and we just fell a little short there."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas finished with a .155 hitting percentage, their lowest since they hit.138 in a loss to Bowling Green on Oct. 11, a stretch of eight consecutive matches.
With CMU leading in sets, 2-1, NIU used an 8-1 set-ending spurt in the fourth, rallying from a 19-17 deficit to square the match at two apiece. Five of the Huskies' eight points in the run came on CMU attack and service errors.
"The turning point was set four when we gave up a six-, seven-point run playing in their building," Gawlik said. "A lot of excitement was building in that run and I think that's where it kind of slipped through our fingers."
CMU led just once, 2-1, in the fifth set. NIU went up 9-7 on a CMU attack error and the Chippewas never got closer than two points the rest of the way.
"Errors and miscues get magnified in set five," Gawlik said. "I did like our fight. We did some really good things to go up 2-1 (in sets), but we need to maintain our poise and composure as teams push back against us."
Meg Wolowicz had 21 kills to lead the Huskies, who finished with 21 attack errors.
LEADERS
Sophomore Lyza Myers finished with a career-high 18 kills and Kalina Smith added 16 to lead the Chippewas. Meg Kern led the Chippewas with 24 digs, matching her season high.
