Seven Chippewas reach double figures in 123-76 rout of IU South Bend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -Â Nonconference action came to a close for the Central Michigan men's basketball with a resounding 123-76 victory over Indiana University South Bend Sunday in McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas improve to 11-2 overall and 7-0 at home and extend their current winning streak to five games. The 11 nonconference victories ties a program record, set last season.
"I thought (Indiana University) South Bend did some things that really helped us prepare for the conference," said CMU head coach Keno Davis. "It's always important when you schedule a game that you want someone to be able to test you and to be able to work on some things, and I felt like we got both today."
Sunday's 123 points ranks fifth in program history for a single game. The record is 127, set in 1987 versus Oakland and then equaled in 2014 against Marygrove.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU opened the game with a 13-2 run and never looked back, fashioning a 52-35 lead after the first 20 minutes behind a combined 27 points from Rob Montgomery and Larry Austin Jr.
The Chippewas would find their stride offensively after intermission, opening the final 20 minutes with a 19-3 run, setting the tone for 71 second half points behind 69 percent shooting from the floor and 12-of-20 from 3-point range. Thirty-five of CMU's 71 second half points came off the bench.
CMU out-rebounded IU South Bend 39-27 and held its starters to 17-of-40 shooting from the field.
LEADERS
Seven Chippewas finished in double figures, led by junior forward David DiLeo, who led all scorers with 24 points. He made six 3-pointers, giving him a combined 11 in his last two games.
Austin added 23 points with eight assists, a team-leading six rebounds and three steals. Montgomery added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting while Shawn Roundtree Jr. finished with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists for his first double-double of the season.
Matt Beachler and Dallas Morgan finished with career-high point totals with 18 points from Beachler off 6-of-10 shooting and 17 points from Morgan off 6-of-9 shooting. Each connected on five 3-pointers, part of the team's season-high 16 triples.
ELECTRIC OFFENSE
Sunday's 123 points marks the seventh time in school history the Chippewas eclipsed the 120 point mark and the third time in the Keno Davis era, with the last time coming Jan. 2, 2015, a 125-80 victory over Central Penn.
"Our style of play wears down teams, and I think you saw that today," Davis said. "We were able to move (the ball), get more assists and focus on improving as a team, not just putting up points as a team or individually."
NEXT STOP, OXFORD
With the nonconference portion of its 2018-19 schedule in the books, the start of Mid-American Conference looms next weekend when the Chippewas travel to face Miami (Ohio).
"At the end of the day (our record is) 0-0 now," Austin said. "We're starting a whole new season, our conference season, so we have to spend the next few days getting ready for that and continue to get better each day."
NEXT UP FOR THE CHIPPEWAS
The Chippewas open MAC play Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. in Oxford against Miami (Ohio). The RedHawks enter with an 8-5 record.
