MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan baseball team got a solid start from freshman right-hander Logan Buczkowski and scored a season-high 14 runs in downing Lawrence Tech, 14-1, on Monday at Theunissen Stadium.
It was the Chippewas' (4-15-1) second-consecutive victory. They are scheduled to visit East Lansing to take on Michigan State (6-12) on Wednesday (3:05 p.m) in a nonleague game, and then are slated to open Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series this weekend at Northern Illinois.
ON THE MOUND
Buczkowski (1-0), a Mount Pleasant native, did not allow a hit in going four innings in his first Theunissen Stadium start. He struck out six and walked one.
Jordan Patty, Cameron Brown, Colton Bradley, Jake Raether and Brandon Reed each pitched in relief, combining on a two-hitter. Both hits, a pair of singles, came off of Patty in the sixth inning.
Matt Baker (0-3) started for Lawrence Tech and took the loss. He allowed seven runs on four hits over 1 1/3 innings.
AT THE PLATE
Zach Heeke, Chase Rollin, Jason Sullivan and Zavier Warren had two hits apiece to lead CMU's 11-hit attack. Warren drove in three runs, while Heeke and Rollin had two RBI apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas scored three runs in the first and added four in the second to open a 7-0 lead. They tacked on a run in the fourth and exploded for six more in the seventh. Lawrence Tech committed five errors. Just five of CMU's runs were earned.
Heeke's two-run single highlighted the first inning, and Warren had a two-run single in the second.
CMU COACH Steve Jaksa
"It was a good win. Anytime you can get a W at home when it's nice and sunny out. "I liked how we came ready to go. We talked about the importance of continuing to fight to get wins. We've been enough of it on the other side so we want to make sure that hey, we come ready to go."
"(Buczkowski) came out there, set the tone, we got seven runs early. We jumped on them early. WE were able to take advantage of a couple mistakes, but we also created some mistakes that they made. We settled in and got really good pitching out of Jordan Patty and right on down the list."
