Chippewas Drop Nonleaguer To Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State scored six runs in its final two turns at bat on Wednesday in handing Central Michigan an 8-1 nonconference loss at the Spartans' Secchia Stadium.
The Chippewas (19-21) are scheduled to play their final Mid-American Conference series of the season when they welcome Toledo to Margo Jonker Stadium this weekend. The teams open on Friday (3 p.m.) and then close the series with a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.).
CMU is 9-8 in the MAC. Toledo is 30-15 including 14-3 in the league. The Rockets lead the MAC West.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas got a run in the first when Lacy Tolfree singled, stole second and scored on an error. CMU left the bases loaded in the inning, and stranded eight in the game.
The Spartans scored twice in the third inning to seize a 2-1 lead, and then tacked on two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth, when Lea Foerster and Kelcey Carrasco homered.
IN THE CIRCLE
Losing pitcher Samantha Howell (2-2) allowed two runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings. She struck out one.
Winning pitcher Kristina Zalewski went the distance for MSU. She allowed eight hits and struck out nine.
AT THE PLATE
Sara Hansen and Shaidan Knapp had two hits each for the Chippewas. Tolfree, Erika Underwood, Rachel Vieira and Kayla Noch also added one hit apiece.
