
Dunn's Hammer-Throw Second Leads CMU On Day 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. - A good start for Central Michigan in the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Buffalo's UB Stadium.
Logan Targgart won the men's hammer throw and the Chippewas got second-place finishes from freshmen Marissa Dunn and Logan Kleam on day one of the three-day meet.
Targgart, a sophomore, won the men's hammer throw with a toss of 59.94 meters. Teammate Connor Covert, a freshman, was fourth with a throw of 52.38.
The Chippewas are tied for second place in the 10-team women's standings with 16 points. Kent State is first with 20 points. CMU shares the second spot with Bowling Green and Ohio. Miami (Ohio) is fifth with 15.
The CMU men collected 37 points and stand in third place in the six-team field. Akron (46) is first, three points ahead of second-place Eastern Michigan. Kent State is fourth with 16.
Dunn placed second in the women's hammer throw with a toss measuring 57.37 meters. Gabrielle Figuero of Kent State won with a 58.03-meter toss. CMU freshman Quiara Wheeler was eighth.
Kleam was second and fellow CMU freshman Conor Naughton placed fourth in the men's 10,000-meter run. Kleam finished in 30:42.44; Naughton in 30:46.39. Eastern Michigan senior Hlynur Andresson won in 30:39.87.
CMU's April Micheaux, a junior, is third after four events in the heptathlon. She amassed 3,115 points on Thursday. Patricia Ortega of Akron is first with 3,468.
Micheaux was second in the shot put, fourth in both the 200-meter dash and in the 100-meter hurdles, and tied for fifth in the high jump. Teammate Mikaela Grant is sixth. The heptathlon is scheduled to be completed on Friday with the long jump, the javelin and the 800-meter run.
Also for the Chippewa women, freshman Megan McElroy and senior Wendy Szuminski placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the women's javelin.
In the men's javelin, CMU's Avery Joseph placed fourth and freshman Ahmed Joseph finished fifth.
The Chippewas' Joseph Seghi is ninth after five events in the decathlon. Seghi was third in the 100, fifth in the shot put, 10th in the 400 and the long jump, and 11th in the high jump.
The final five events of the decathlon - the 110 hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and the 1,500-meter run - are scheduled for Friday.
CMU's Nadia Williams (women's 200), Jack Dodge (men's 200), Lorenzo Wells (men's 200), and Ja'Corey Lipsey (men's 400 hurdles) advanced to the finals in their respective events.
