MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Three Central Michigan pitchers combined on a five-hitter and five Chippewas had two hits apiece on Wednesday as CMU downed NAIA Cleary, 8-0, in a nonconference game at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
CMU (21-26-1) opens a three-game Mid-American Conference series at Miami (Ohio) on Friday. Cleary is 20-26.
Wednesday's win was the 499th for Steve Jaksa as coach of the Chippewa program.
ON THE MOUND
Brandon Reed, Cameron Miller and Jordan Patty teamed up to post CMU's second shutout of the season and its first since a 6-0 win at Northern Illinois on March 23.
Reed, a freshman left-hander, made his first collegiate start. He allowed one hit over three innings. Miller, a freshman right-hander went five innings, surrendering five hits, and Patty pitched the ninth. They combined to strike out 10 and walk just one.
Miller (1-0) earned the victory in his first collegiate decision.
AT THE PLATE
Jacob Crum, Zavier Warren, Daniel Robinson, Jason Sullivan and Zach Heeke collected two hits apiece for the Chippewas.
All 11 of CMU's hits were singles. Sullivan, Heeke and Ty Rollin drove in two hits apiece.
STREAK
Robinson extended his hit streak to 10 games, a season-long for a Chippewa. He is hitting .457 (16 for 35) over that span, and has collected multiple hits in four of his last five games.
HIT AGAIN
Heeke was hit by a pitch for the third consecutive game and the 21st time this season, adding to his program record for times hit by a pitch in a single season. The previous mark, 17, was held by two players, Jeff Helps (2007 and 2008) and Adam Collins (2014).
