CHICAGO – A balanced attack led the Central Michigan volleyball team to a victory in its season opener.
Â
Four Chippewas reached double digits in kills, as CMU defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, in the opener of the UIC Invitational.
Â
Kalina Smith led the Chippewas with 15 kills, while Savannah Thompson had 11, and Lyza Myers and Maddie Whitfield each posted 10. Marissa Grant added.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tied at 15 in the first set, CMU scored six of the next seven points to go up one. After MDSE won the second set, the Chippewas responded in sets three and four. They trailed only briefly, very early, in both sets.
"I was pretty pleased with our opening-day performance," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said as the Chippewas won their opener for the second consecutive season. "Anytime you open up the season you still have a little bit of butterflies about who you are going to be."
Â
IN THE ACT
In addition to her nine kills, Grant, the Chippewa setter, finished with 40 assists and 14 digs. On the defensive end, Jayla Wesley recorded two blocks, Megan Kern had 16 digs and Savannah Thompson added 14. CMU recorded seven aces, two each by Smith, Myers and Maddie Whitfield.
Â
BALANCE
With five players recording nine kills or more, Gawlik said he expects balance to be a trend moving forward.
"Anytime you can have a lot of people contribute you will be very difficult to defend," he said. "Without a doubt that kind of balance is going to serve us well moving forward."
Â
YOUTH MOVEMENT
All four of the Chippewas who recorded double digit kills are underclassmen.
Â
"With a lot of sophomores and a lot of freshmen out there at one time you're always holding your breath to see if they keep their composure with the lights on," Gawlik said. "For us to come out and get a win against a talented team is a pretty good start."
Â
UP NEXT
CMU will conclude the UIC invitational on Saturday with games against Bryant (11 a.m.) and the host Flames (8 p.m.)
