IOWA CITY, Iowa – Jordan Rolli scored off a rebound just over seven minutes into overtime on Sunday as Northern Iowa handed Central Michigan a 2-1 loss in the Chippewas' final game of the Hawkeye Invitational.
The Chippewas, who opened the invitational with a 3-1 loss to host Iowa on Friday, are 1-4.
"I thought we came out and played well," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Overtime games are always difficult at this level, Sunday games are always difficult."
HOW IT HAPPENED
It didn't take long for the Chippewas to find the back of the net as Shannon Magnan scored just 19 minutes into the game, giving CMU a 1-0 advantage. Sarah Mitchell picked up the assist. It was Magnan's second goal of the season.
The Chippewas held the lead for nearly 60 minutes before Northern Iowa evened the match in the 78th minute.
"I thought today the team responded well and worked through the back end of a tournament against a very good Northern Iowa team," McGahey said. "You have to give credit as Northern Iowa took advantage of their chances in the second half and overtime today. Unfortunately, we just came out on the short end of it today."
DUAL GOALKEEPERS
Morgan Britain and Brianna Wallbridge saw action in goal for the Chippewas. Britain stopped the only shot she faced in the first half while Wallbridge had two saves in the second half and one in overtime.
NUMBERS
Northern Iowa outshot CMU 16-8. The Panthers also held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Chippewas held a 5-3 advantage in team saves.
NEXT
Central Michigan returns to action next weekend when it travels to Ann Arbor to face Michigan on Friday (5 p.m.) before returning to Mount Pleasant for a date with Oakland on Sunday (1 p.m.).
