MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan soccer team has a pair of in-state games this weekend as the Chippewas travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan on Friday (5 p.m.) and then return home to face Oakland on Sunday (1 p.m.) at the CMU Soccer Stadium.
Â
The Wolverines are 3-3 with wins over Boston, Western Michigan and Marquette. The Golden Grizzlies are 0-5.
SELF ASSESMENT
CMU slipped to 1-4 after a hard-fought 2-1 overtime loss to Northern Iowa to close out the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City.
Â
Coach Peter McGahey is remaining positive and has seen several good things from his team.
Â
"We're really beginning to understand and get some chemistry in terms of how our attack has to be," he said. "We generated some good quality chances that will definitely be foundations moving forward. If you can have challenges and obstacles in the nonconference schedule, they can really help build some resilience for when you get into the conference schedule."
Â
MAGINIFICENT MAGNANS
Shannon and Sheila Magnan accounted for both the Chippewas goals last weekend. The sisters hail from Brighton.
Sheila, a sophomore, scored in Friday's 3-1 loss to Iowa and Shannon, a senior, scored against Northern Iowa on Sunday.
Shannon was one of only two players to start all 19 games for CMU last season. The two-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference team member totaled four points last season. Sheila played in 14 games last season, making 12 starts. She led all CMU freshmen with 1,071 minutes played and also had four points.
Both sisters have started all five games this season. Shannon has two goals and two assists on the season while Sheila also has a goal.
Â
PRACTICE
Coach McGahey has been pleased with the way his team has responded to coaching and doing things they have been asked to do.  Â
"We've been working on attention to detail, staying focused, and then continuing to build on our strengths," McGahey said.
Â
McGAHEY
"Yeah you want to try to win and play Michigan on Friday night and get three points," McGahey said. "The most important thing for us is continuing to step forward with soccer and continuing to deal with the obstacles that are put in our way."
Â
