Chippewas fall in overtime

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Saint Francis (Pa.) scored an untimed goal to tie at the end of regulation and then scored the game winner just over five minutes in to overtime on Friday in handing Central Michigan a 4-3 nonconference field hockey loss at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
CMU is 1-5; St Francis is 2-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Red Flash scored just before halftime to seize a 1-0 lead at the break. Sophomore Taryn Damm, redshirt freshman Imogen West, and sophomore Samantha Glapinski scored the Chippewa goals.
The Red Flash had three penalty corners in the final minute of regulation. Hannah Retherford converted when Saint Francis was awarded its third penalty corner because the ball did not travel outside the goalie circle. If it had, the Chippewas would have been 3-2 winner. Retherford's goal tied the game and sent it to the extra session.
Brianna Govia scored the game-winner at the 5:04 mark of the OT.
SECOND-HALF SURGE
The key to the Chippewas' three second-half goals was possession, coach Catherine Ostoich said.
"Possession and trying to go right with the ball," she said. "We like to dribble left for some reason, but we did a lot of dribbling to the right, which was awesome, and trying to find passes."
The Chippewas finished with 14 shots, 12 of which came in the second half and in overtime.
OSTOICH:
"It hurts, it really hurts. I mean I wish I could take this from them so they don't have to experience it, but at the same time they need to experience this, so we'll do whatever it takes to not have this feeling again.
"The team played so well, I mean, there were so many players who stepped up and made great changes. We made so many changes in this game and I'm so proud of them.
"We got to play for 70 minutes and above. The biggest thing we have to do is take care of the ball and we need a mentality for the whole time that were out there. Whatever it takes to keep it out of our circle and whatever it takes to put it in their circle."
NEXT
The Chippewas go to Bloomington, Ind. to play against Stanford in a nonleague game on Sunday, Sept. 9.
