Larry Austin Jr. notches his second double-double this week (26 points, 11 rebounds)
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan men's basketball team rallied all the way back from a 16-point, second-half deficit but, ultimately, could not secure the victory and fell to Bowling Green, 97-87, in overtime Saturday in McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas slip to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference with their first loss in eight games. The Falcons improve to 11-5 (3-0 MAC) for their seventh-consecutive victory.
"I think we're definitely going to learn from this one," said senior guard Larry Austin Jr. "It comes down to us taking care of the ball, knocking down free throws when the game is on the line and keeping everybody composed."
"When we're in this position again I think the outcome will be better."
The Falcons entered No. 3 in the nation and No. 1 in the MAC in rebounding but Bowling Green's advantage on the boards was just two at 46-44.
"To be out rebounded by one of the best rebounding teams in the country by two isn't necessarily a win on the rebounding side," said CMU head coach Keno Davis. "If you told me going into the game we're going to play within two rebounds of (Bowling Green) I knew we would've put forth a great effort to be able to get that."
HOW IT HAPPENED
After turning the tide and battling back, primarily on the strength of 3-point shooting from Dallas Morgan and David DiLeo, Central Michigan found itself leading by six points with 1:33 remaining. The Falcons responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 78-78, sending it overtime.
In the extra period, CMU again fought from behind, overcoming an early four-point hole to knot the game at 87-87 on a Shawn Roundtree Jr. free throw with 2:07 remaining.
But Bowling Green's Justin Turner scored the next nine points to put the game away in the Falcons' favor.
LEADERS
Austin recorded his second double-double this week and fourth this season with 26 points and 11 rebounds, adding six assists, three steals and two blocks. The senior guard had 13 points and 11 assists in an overtime win over Akron on Tuesday.
Roundtree totaled 14 points, including a 10-of-12 effort from the free throw line, seven rebounds and six assists.
Dallas Morgan added 11 points off the bench, making 3-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc.
