CMU falls to MAC-leading Kent State
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey team fought hard in a competitive battle with Mid-American Conference leading-Kent State on Friday before ultimately dropping a 3-2 decision at the newly renamed Cristy Freese Field.
The Chippewas are 2-13, 0-4 MAC; Kent State is 9-5, 4-0.
How It Happened
Kent State opened the scoring less than a minute into the second quarter.
Less than three minutes later, the Chippewas answered with a goal by junior Samantha Glapinski, who deflected a Georgina Minta shot past the Kent State goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
"Kent scored a goal and then we got right back and scored a goal," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "You can tell that (my players) truly believed in themselves, believed in the team, and that was awesome because it's something we just haven't seen in a while."
Kent State went up 2-1 with a goal early in the second half. The Chippewas managed to stay within striking distance for much of the second half behind inspired defensive play and strong goalkeeping from Abigail Ebersole.
The Chippewas tied it just over three minutes into the fourth quarter when Glapinski scored again.
"She did awesome," Ostoich said of Glapinski's play. "She took that second shot that was such a low-angle shot, should not have gone in, but it went in because we actually took the opportunity to shoot. It was really exciting to see her actually do it today."
Despite the Chippewas' best efforts, Kent State scored what proved to be the decisive goal with just over seven minutes left in regulation.
Strong 'D'
The Chippewas were able to stay competitive thanks largely to impressive defensive play.
"I thought that first half was one of the best games I've seen by our defenders this entire season," Ostoich said. "They came to play, and they really shut them down."
Ebersole recorded nine saves including an array of highlight-reel quality plays.
"She just made some really great saves, great decision-making," Ostoich said. "She came up with some clutch saves that kept us in it. While I thought our 'D' was really great that first half, that second half I think Abby just really stepped up and just made some key saves."
Big Day
The Chippewas, Ostoich said, turned in one of their best performances of the season, and it came on a day in which the field was dedicated to longtime former coach Cristy Freese in a pregame ceremony.
"I said to the girls (that) we were playing for something bigger today," Ostoich said. "I'm so happy that we were able to put on such a great performance for her today."
