CMU maintains 2-game lead in MAC West
OXFORD, Ohio. – The Central Michigan volleyball team saw its win streak end at 12 games on Sunday as the Chippewas dropped a five-set Mid-American Conference match at Miami (Ohio).
It was the Chippewas' first MAC loss of the season, and their first loss since Sept. 13, when they dropped a nonleaguer to DePaul on the Blue Devils' home floor at the DePaul Invitational. Miami won Sunday's match, 25-16, 18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-8.
The Chippewas are 17-3, 7-1 MAC. They hold a two-game lead in the MAC West over Ball State, which is 5-3 in league play. Miami, which is in the East Division, has won four straight and is 11-8 (6-2).
How It Happened
The Chippewas held a 2-1 lead in sets and were up, 15-7 and then 17-10, in the fourth when the wheels wobbled. Miami went on an 11-3 tear to seize a 21-20 lead and the momentum, and the RedHawks evened the match by taking the fourth, 25-23.
"We played some great volleyball for 80 percent of set four," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "We opened up a pretty significant lead, and I thought we were getting a little too tentative down the stretch. We were looking at the scoreboard and hoping it would be enough to win. To Miami's credit, they got aggressive. They chipped their way back into set four. We did some good things, but we let a good team in Miami get into a rhythm."
Miami led the fifth and final set, 7-6, then scored five consecutive points to up the advantage to 12-6 before finishing off the Chippewas.
Slow Start
Miami took set one, 25-16, as the Chippewas finished with a minus-.026 hitting percentage. The RedHawks hit at .387 in the set. CMU responded with wins in the next two sets.
"I thought Miami jumped on us early, and we played a little timid," Gawlik said. "I wouldn't say we were afraid of the moment, but we got rolled in set one. We went into the huddle after set one and we used the term 'pick a fight' because we want to be the aggressors, we want to be the ones that are throwing punches, and I thought we did a really good job of that in sets two and three."
Numbers
Miami finished with a .228 attacking percentage, while the Chippewas finished at .135.
