Chippewa return to home pitch on Sunday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season and saw its win streak end at five games as it fell to Western Michigan, 1-0, on Friday in a Mid-American Conference game at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Â
The Chippewas are 5-1-2 and in third place in the league at 2-1. Western is 4-5-1, 2-0-1.
Â
How It Happened
The lone goal of the game came at the 73rd minute by Lydia Bajema.
Â
CMU finished with a 16-8 edge in shots, with eight of them on goal. Lauren DeBeau and Riley Mann led the Chippewas in shots with four each.
Â
"We created some chances here and there and it's been the story of the season," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said. "We've created some stuff and we just can't finish. We knew that one day it would come back to haunt us and it's unfortunate it was today."
Â
Making the most of opportunities "is something we need to keep working on," Groves said. "It's something we've been working on for the past four weeks. Sooner or later (our approach) is going to have to change or we're going to have to try to get some different people some opportunities.
Â
"It's disappointing to lose our undefeated record too. We're going to drop in the RPI. But the biggest thing is we lost three points at home, and you can't do that in the conference if you want to challenge for something. It's disappointing."
Â
In Net
Zoie Reed made three saves in going the distance in goal for the Chippewas.
Â
Next
CMU will be back at home on Sunday, Oct. 6 (1 p.m.) against Northern Illinois . NIU is 2-7-1, 0-3 after losing, 3-1, on Friday at Eastern Michigan.
