CMU improves to 6-1-2, 3-1 in MAC
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan women's soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the season, topping Northern Illinois, 2-0, on Sunday in a Mid-American Conference match at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.
Â
The Chippewas, who dropped a 1-0 decision on Friday to Western Michigan, improved to 6-1-2, 3-1 MAC.
Â
"The biggest thing was we needed to respond," CMU coach Jeremy Groves. "We talked about it a lot (on Saturday). We didn't do any recovery yesterday, we trained and got in front of the goal. This morning, we talked about having a response, and we did."
Â
How It Happened
Marle Bringard scored an unassisted goal in the 34th minute to get CMU on the board. It was Bringard's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Â
"In terms of what we do in training with putting her on goal, and pushing her a little bit, she's risen to the occasion so far and she's been great," Groves said of Bringard, who last week earned the MAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. "She's dangerous. She gets the ball down and creates opportunities. Right now she's thriving and playing with confidence, and hopefully it'll continue."
Â
Cami Taylor scored a goal in the 72nd minute, with the assist from Alex Hebert, to extend CMU's lead. It Taylor's second goal of the season and Hebert's first assist.
Â
Numbers
CMU had 21 shots, with nine of them on goal. NIU had five shots. Bringard led the Chippewas with five shots, followed by Cassidy Pettinger and Lauren DeBeau, who had three each.
In Goal
CMU senior Zoie Reed made four saves in posting her fourth shutout of the season. While Reed has been one of the best goalies in the MAC, she said she doesn't get caught up in statistics.
Â
"I don't really look at stats that often," she said. "I'm just trying to help my teammates win. Honestly, it's the soldiers in front of me that really help bring this team together. I just try to do my job, and do it to the best of my abilities."

CMU is scheduled to continue MAC play next week, traveling to defending league-champion Bowling Green on Thursday, Oct. 10 (7 p.m.), and then returning to Mount Pleasant on Sunday, Oct. 13 (1 p.m.) to face Toledo.
