BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- A heartbreaking finish.
The Central Michigan women's soccer team fell to Bowling Green, 3-2, in double overtime on Thursday in a critical Mid-American Conference game at the Falcons' Cochrane Field.
CMU drops to 6-2-2, 3-2 MAC and is now in fourth place with nine points. The Falcons are 7-4-2, 5-0 and lead the league with 15 points.
Ball State and Western Michigan, both of which won their respective games on Thursday, moved ahead of the Chippewas in the standings. The Cardinals (4-1 league) have 12 points; the Broncos (3-1-1) have 10.
How It Happened
Kennedy White booted home a rebound with 59 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Falcons the victory.
CMU led, 2-1, when Chelsee Washington scored with 36 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and send it to extra time.
"In overtime, I thought they did a really good job and created some good chances," said CMU coach Jeremy Groves, who lauded the play of his goalkeeper, Zoie Reed, who made three saves in extra time. "Zoie Reed was really good in overtime. She made some really big saves for us."
Up And Down
The Chippewas trailed, 1-0, and then tied the game on an Alina Miagkova penalty-kick goal with under a minute to play in the first half.
CMU surged ahead, 2-1, on a goal by Samantha Kaye-Toral in the 53rd minute. Maria Kaschalk assisted. It was Kaye-Toral's first goal as a Chippewa.
"We started off really slow," Groves said. "We struggled early on, (then) we made some changes as a coaching staff in terms of formation. We were very much on the front foot towards the end of the second half.
"Coming out in the second half, we did really well, but it was 36 seconds that we couldn't hang on for the victory. We give up a really bad goal on our part. One of our center backs missed the ball, (Washington) went straight through and spotted it home."
Numbers
CMU had 14 shots with six shots on goal, and two corner kicks. Bowling Green had 23 shots, nine on goal, and seven corner kicks.
In Goal
Reed made six saves, several of them that helped keep the Chippewas in the game against one of the league's top-scoring teams.
"Reed came out and took some services really well, which alleviated some pressure," Grove said. "On three or four different occasions, she made some really big saves for us in big moments."
