Chippewas head to Bowling Green on Thursday, return home on Sunday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Still a long way to go in the Mid-American Conference soccer race.
Yet the impact of Central Michigan's game on Thursday (7 p.m.) at Bowling Green could, ultimately, be substantial on the league standings.
The Chippewas are 3-1 in league play, while the defending league regular-season and tournament-champion Falcons are 4-0 and alone in first place. CMU is tied with Ball State for second.
"They've been in this situation before," first-year CMU coach Jeremy Groves said of the Falcons. "I think all the pressure is on them. They've won the MAC before, they're the hot team in the conference. Hopefully we'll go there and spoil the party."
The Chippewas, 6-1-2 overall, return to Mount Pleasant to take on Toledo in a MAC game on Sunday, Oct. 13 (1 p.m.). The Rockets are 3-9, 0-4.
Precedence
CMU has won big road games this season, including a nonleaguer at Kentucky and at Ball State, the defending MAC Tournament runner-up. That win at Ball State gave the Chippewas the tie-breaker over the Cardinals should they finished tied in the standings at the end of the regular season.
"You'd like to think (those wins will help)," Groves said. "But it's a different game against a different team on a different night. They have experience with winning the conference. … For us, we have to keep true to who we are and just try to get some kind of positive result."
Numbers
Bowling Green has three of the MAC's top-10 scorers in Nikki Cox (five goals) and Maureen Kennedy and Kennedy White (four each). Cox ranks second in the league with 14 points.
CMU senior Marle Bringard is tied with Kennedy and White with four goals.
Chippewa goalkeeper Zoie Reed leads the MAC in goals-against average (.510), save percentage (.902) and shutouts (4).
The Chippewas have surrendered just five goals, a league low, and has outscored their opponents by a combined 11-5.
Last Week
CMU sustained its first loss of the season when it fell to Western Michigan, 1-0, last Friday. The Chippewas bounced back on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois.
Next
CMU will be on the road for two MAC games next weekend, the first at Ohio on Friday, Oct. 18 (4 p.m.), and the second at Kent State on Sunday, Oct. 20 (1 p.m.).
