Chippewa Field Hockey Falls At Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Central Michigan field hockey team was defeated by California, 8-1, in a nonconference game at the Bears' Underhill Field on Sunday.

Alli Huddleson scored the lone goal for CMU. Chippewa goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole had 10 saves.

The Chippewas (2-10) close their west-coast trip on Tuesday (1 p.m.) at UC Davis (5-5).

How It Happened
The Bears (4-7) got off to a fast start, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the game.

"I think we came out pretty slow, unfortunately," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "I think they were just a good team that played at a high pace. So it took us a couple of minutes to get into it, and by that time we'd already let some goals in."

Cal tacked on three more in the second quarter before Huddleson found the back of the net to get CMU on the board less than two minutes before halftime.

"We made some adjustments and got better, and we attacked," said Ostoich. "We've got to earn it every time we're up there and attacking."

Rematch in Cali
The Chippewas will get a rematch with UC Davis on Tuesday. The Aggies defeated the Chippewas, 2-0, earlier this season in Mount Pleasant.

"I'm really excited because I don't think we played very well at all that (first) game," she said. "I just think it's a chance for us to kind of redeem ourselves against that team, so I'm expecting us to put up way more of a fight."

Ostoich also said Tuesday's game is an opportunity for the Chippewas to evaluate their progress since the beginning of the season.

"I think we've grown a lot since that game," she said. "We've been through a lot of challenges, of course, but I think there's been a lot of positives that we've taken away from games that we're hopefully going to bring into that game."
