Field at Wisconsin includes 5 top-20 teams
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan men's cross country team will travel to Madison, Wis. on Friday to participate in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships.
The event, hosted by Wisconsin, covers 10,000 meters on the Badgers' Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. The regional is one of nine across the nation. The top two teams in each regional, plus 13 additional teams and 36 individuals, advance to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23.
The CMU women will not compete in Friday's event.
"We have dealt with a lot of illness this season," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said. "I think as a whole, the women are run down from trying to get through that and still compete at a high level. We are ready to turn the page on the cross country season and get ready to do big things on the (indoor) track."
The Chippewa men will run in a field that includes the host Badgers, who are ranked ninth nationally, along with No. 13 Indiana, No. 16 Michigan, No. 17 Purdue, and No. 19 Notre Dame.
CMU coach Jason Hartmann said the goal is to gain experience and see how the Chippewas stack up with some of the nation's best.
"Our regional is one of the better regions in the nation," he said. "So just trying to see where we stack up as far as where our team is and where we're at. We're just looking for the opportunity to improve, really."
