Field Hockey Drops Finale, Looks To MAC Tournament

OXFORD, Ohio – The Central Michigan field hockey team closed the regular season on Saturday with a 5-0 Mid-American Conference loss to Miami (Ohio).
The Chippewas will now turn their attention to the Mid-American Conference Tournament in Oxford. CMU, the seventh seed, will play sixth-seeded Appalachian State on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
How It Happened
The CMU defense was forced to work hard for much of the game due to its offense's inability to generate many chances.
The RedHawks outshot the Chippewas, 22-5.
"It was a tough one," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "We got the ball, we just couldn't value it when we went up the field."
The RedHawks scored goals early and late in the second quarter for a 2-0 halftime lead.
"I thought we did some things well," Ostoich said. "Something we've really worked on was limiting the corners and fouling outside, which we did a lot better than we did against Michigan State, so that was definitely progress."
The CMU offense was bottled up for a large portion of the game, recording just three shots on goal. Chippewa goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole made nine saves.
"Doesn't matter how much defense we're playing, but we have got to value the ball when we get it," Ostoich said.
Quick Turnaround
The Chippewas still have a chance to get a win against a MAC opponent despite a winless regular season in conference play.
"To be completely honest, we've been focusing on (the MAC Tournament) for the last couple days," Ostoich said. Saturday's game.
Ostoich said the Chippewas will work hard over the next few days to give themselves the best shot at winning that first conference tournament game.
"We're just really going to work on valuing the ball and we've got to get our corners to be a little more accurate," she said. "We're really going to just fine-tune some things and really talk about our press and outlining how exactly we're going to shut down our opponent."
