Crum homers for second-straight game, Sullivan finishes with 3 hits to lead 10-hit attack
The Chippewas defeated Lamar, 10-6, on Sunday to earn their sixth straight victory and finish the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
"I'm extremely pleased with our energy and enthusiasm today," first-year CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "It's not easy to win four games on a weekend and our team came out determined today."
CMU outscored its four opponents, 41-13, on the weekend in improving to 6-2. The Chippewas head to Kissimmee, Fla. for Spring Break during which they will play eight games in nine days, beginning with a game against Hofstra on Saturday, March 2 (noon).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacob Crum's three-run homer in the second inning gave the Chippewas a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. It was Crum's second homer in as many games. He hit a grand slam in a 12-3 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday.
The Chippewas added two runs in the fourth inning on a Zach Heeke RBI groundout and Griffin Lockwood-Powell's bases-loaded walk, and then tacked on three more in the fifth. Zavier Warren and Chase Rollin both drove in runs with groundouts, and Heeke drove in a run with an infield single.
The Chippewas led, 8-2, after 4 ½ innings and the lead proved to be plenty for starter Zach Kohn and the bullpen.
AT THE PLATE
Jason Sullivan had three hits including a double to lead the Chippewas at the plate, Warren homered and Zach Gilles and Evan Kratt had two hits apiece.
ON THE MOUND
Kohn improved to 2-0 by going five innings for the win. He surrendered four runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out two.
Cameron Miller, Ian Leatherman and Logan Buczkowski worked in relief for CMU.
NEXT
It was CMU's second-consecutive weekend road trip in which it played four games in three days. The Chippewas split four games in their season-opening series last week in Troy, Ala.
"More than anything, we need to catch up on sleep, time in the classroom and work hard in the weight room this week," Bischel said. "It's exciting to know that we have a few days of practice to work in all areas this week.
"We still have a lot of room to improve offensively, but our hitting approach was outstanding at time this weekend, which helped us maximize our hits."
