Chippewas look to climb leaderboard in Tuesday's final round
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Central Michigan's Danielle Sawyer opened with an even-par 72 and then followed with a second-round 78 on Monday at the William & Mary Intercollegiate on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort.
Sawyer, playing as an individual, totaled 150 and is tied for third in the 80-player field. She stands five shots behind the leader, Mia Kness of Seton Hall. Kness is at 145 after shooting 71-74.
The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday.
Sawyer's first-round 72 matches her career best, which she posted during the Toledo Rocket Classic in October, 2016. The junior from Grafton, Ont. made five birdies and five bogeys in her record-tying round. She made no worse than a bogey in her second-round 78.
"Our bright spot of the day was Danielle's excellent play," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "I was so proud of her grit and toughness today."
The Chippewas posted a 345 team score in the opening round and followed with a second-round 351. They are in 13th place with a 696 team total.
Jami Laude led the Chippewas with a 174 total. She opened with an 83 and followed with a 91. Also for CMU, Meghan Deardorff shot 83-92 – 175, Bria Colosky posted back-to-back 88s for a 176, and both Holly Hines and Rachel Leucuta came in at 180. Hines shot 91-89, while Leucuta shot 97-83.
"Pride and redemption will be on the line for the final round on Tuesday," Earle said.
Seton Hall stands in first place with a 614 team total. The Pirates opened with a tournament-best 301 and followed with a 313. They hold an 11-shot lead over both High Point and Penn.
