CMU opens Southern Conference play next weekend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan Lacrosse team will entertain Marquette in a nonconference matchup on Thursday, March 20 (2 p.m.) at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Â
WHERE THEY STAND
The Chippewas come in at 2-5 and are coming off a 24-18 loss to Duquesne. Marquette is 6-4 and coming off a 16-12 win against Niagara. The Golden Eagles have won three straight games.
Â
LEADERS
Jocelyne Lemay leads CMU in goals with 20, and points (23) on the season. Last week against Duquesne, Lemay scored five goals and added two assists, totaling seven points on the day. The five goals was one shy of the program record. Lemay's goal total ranks second in the Southern Conference and her goals per game, 2.86, leads the league.
Â
Dominique Hamman has started all seven games this season in goal for the Chippewas. She has logged 290 minutes and carries a 14.69 goals against average and a .470 save percentage. Hope Murray has appeared in five games and has clocked 129-plus minutes with a 12.96 goals against average and a save percentage of .556.
Â
Grace Gabriel leads Marquette in both goals (34) and points (38).
Â
Julianna Horning has started all 10 of Marquette's games in goal. She carries a 14.27 goals against average. Sophia Leva has appeared in eight games and has an 11.85 goals against average with a .417 save percentage.
Â
A BREATHER
Since the Chippewas have played five games in the last 15 days, the team has an opportunity to take a deep breath and re-adjust with nearly a week to prepare for the Golden Eagles.
Â
"I don't think anyone is tired, but we just thrive more on consistency," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "When things are out of place, you tend to feel weird and off. So I think we've learned how to manage some of those tougher moments. But I think all of us, even as a staff, are looking forward to getting into that routine of getting a chance to come in the office and break some things."
Â
SCOUTING
Earlier in the season, Marquette lost a nonconference game to Cincinnati 22-18. CMU defeated Cincinnati, 12-11, in overtime earlier this season.
Â
"They're a strong program," CMU Graduate Assistant Coach and former Marquette Lacrosse player Allison Lane said. "They have a strong offense, a lot of drivers, and a lot of cutters as well. They're defense is pretty solid."
Â
Said Tisdale: "They're an experienced program. They've played some tough teams and they bring a lot to the table, as far as composure. They have a lot of good leaders that get them ready for every game. We've come close in many occasions to beating this program. We do hope to walk away with the win. We know (we're facing) a high quality opponent that's going to go on and have a great conference season."
Â
NEXT
The Chippewas begin a four-game stretch of road games next week when they go to Kennesaw, Ga. to face Kennesaw State on Friday, March 29 (4 p.m.). On Sunday, March 31 (noon), the Chippewas open Southern Conference play in Macon, Ga. against Mercer.

CMU is the defending SoCon regular-season champion.
