Chippewas rally past Miami; doubleheader set for Saturday

OXFORD, Ohio -- Erika Underwood hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning on Friday to lift the Central Michigan softball team to a 4-1 victory over Miami (Ohio) in the Chippewas' Mid-American Conference opener.

Down 1-0 in the top of the seventh, the Chippewas (10-14) got a run to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Underwood led off the seventh with a single and pinch runner Andrea Perlberg move to second on a Shannon Stein bunt. Morgan Gardner delivered an RBI single to tie the game.

Rachel Vieira singled and Sara Hansen walked and then Underwood delivered the big blow, a three-run homer with two out in the eighth.

The RedHawks (13-11) got a double and a single in the bottom of the eighth to put runners at first and third with one out. CMU reliever Cloe Mallory induced back-to-back popups to end the game.

Mallory (3-2) surrendered five hits over four innings for the victory. CMU starter Kaitlyn Bean went four innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out two and walking one.

The Chippewas and RedHawks are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.).
