Chippewa long jumper finishes 6th at NCAA Indoor Championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Central Michigan's Nadia Williams is an All-American.
Williams, a junior from Mount Horeb, Wis., placed sixth in the women's long jump on Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Alabama-Birmingham at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Williams is the first All-America athlete for the CMU women's track & field team since 2012, when Milica Kulidzan earned the honor in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"This just makes me really excited for the future because this is only the beginning," Williams said.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Williams' best jump measured 20 feet, 8 inches. Jasmyn Steels of Northwestern (La.) State won with a leap of 21-2 ½.
The top eight finishers in each event earn First Team All-America honors; those finishing ninth-16th are Second Team All-Americans.
"I think she did really well," said Jenny Swieton, CMU's director of track & field. "The fact that it was her first time at the NCAA Indoor Championships, you never know how somebody is going to handle that.
"She handled herself really well. She was really composed; a little nervous, but mostly relaxed, which was really impressive, and she showed a lot of maturity at the meet."
ON THE MAP
Williams' performance brings to an end the indoor season, and a highly successful one for the Chippewas. The CMU women won the MAC title two weeks ago -- Williams won the long jump and placed second in the 200-meter dash in helping lead the Chippewas to the crown, their first since 2004 – and Swieton was named the MAC Coach of the Year.
Those results, which capped a solid indoor season, show that the Chippewas are indeed a program on the rise. CMU is scheduled to open the outdoor season on March 23-24 at the Vanderbilt Commordore Classic.
"We want everyone who graduated (from CMU) and is associated with the track & field program at any time to be proud to be a Chippewa," Swieton said. "When (our athletes) tell people, 'I was on the track & field program at Central Michigan,' people will know, 'Oh yeah, Central Michigan is legit.'
"We want to have continued success, not just be a flash in the pan. It's just like Nadia said, this is just the beginning."
