TOLEDO, Ohio – The Central Michigan Baseball team surrendered two runs in the eighth inning in dropping a 4-3 decision to Toledo on Friday in the opener of a three-game Mid-American Conference series at the Rockets' Mercy Field.
The Chippewas, 26-11 overall, 8-5 MAC, stranded nine baserunners in falling for the fourth time in their last five conference games. The Rockets improved to 14-21, 3-8.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday (1 p.m.). CMU junior Cameron Brown (6-0) is scheduled to start against Layne Schintz-Paxton (2-3). The series finale is set for Sunday (1 p.m.).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas got a two-run double from Zavier Warren and an RBI single from Griffin Lockwood-Powell to seize a 3-0 lead in the third inning.
Toledo scored a run in the fourth and one in the sixth to draw to 3-2. After CMU left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, the Rockets used a double, a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to pull ahead. Both runs were unearned.
AT THE PLATE

ON THE MOUND
Sophomore Jordan Patty took the loss. He struck out two in 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Pat Leatherman.
Leatherman allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings.
