Chippewas remain at home next weekend to take on Ball State
The Chippewas are 18-23-1, 8-6-1 MAC, and play host to Ball State in a three-game league series next weekend. Northern Illinois is 24-22, 9-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The third inning was the difference in both of Saturday's games. The Huskies scored six runs in the third inning of the opener en route to a 13-6 victory; they scored seven times in the third in posting a 9-0 win in the nightcap, which ended after five innings on the run rule.
"Obviously it was a disappointing performance," CMU coach Margo Jonker said. "Game 1, our defense fell apart, (but) we hit fairly well. Game 2 we didn't hit very well and our pitching didn't do the job. Overall, at one point in time (today), all parts of our game were not up to normal for us.
"We weren't sharp defensively (in the opener); it was the worst game defensively we've probably had this year. Came back the second game and the defense was better. It was just one of those fluke things that our defense wasn't good in the first game."
GAME 1
Rachel Vieira had three hits including a triple, and Erika Underwood had an RBI triple to lead the Chippewas at the plate.
The Chippewas committed a season-high seven errors in the game.
Samantha Howell (5-7) started and took the loss. She allowed seven runs, just three of which were earned, on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings. Cloe Mallory and Shannon Stein pitched in relief.
GAME 2
The Chippewas managed just two hits, an Allison Curtis double and an Underwood single, off NIU pitcher Mackenzie Bryan.
CMU starter Kaitlyn Bean (7-5) surrendered eight runs on nine hits over 2 2/3 innings in taking the loss. Howell pitched in relief.
