CMU returns to MAC play on Wednesday at Western Michigan
The Chippewas (16-19-1) are scheduled to return to Mid-American Conference play on Wednesday (2 p.m.) when they go to Western Michigan. CMU is 7-3-1 in league play and is in second place. Western is 10-17, 3-4.
CMU swept a doubleheader from the Broncos a week ago in Mount Pleasant.
"This game is done," CMU coach Margo Jonker said. "Tomorrow morning we move on and go get Western. Let's do the best we can to beat the Broncos."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans hit five home runs in the game, the first a three-run shot in the first inning as they seized a 4-0 lead. They extended their lead to 8-3 after five, and then exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning. The game was called after six innings on the run rule.
BIG HITS
The Chippewas had 10 hits to the Spartans' 12, but they stranded eight baserunners. Trailing 8-3, CMU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, but could not push across a run.
"We didn't get the key hit and they had the big hits," Jonker said. "Our pitchers can't let the ball go out of the park. We got behind in the count so we had to put it over the middle and they happened to hit the ball in the air to (right field) where the wind was blowing."
AT THE PLATE
Rachel Vieira tied her season high with three hits to lead the Chippewas at the plate, while Shaidan Knapp and Erika Underwood added two hits apiece. One of Knapp's hits was a triple. Samantha Mills added an RBI double.
It was the second three-hit game for Vieira in her last four and her third multi-hit game in her last five. She is 10 for 17 (.588) in her last five games.
Charla Echols had two home runs and a double to lead the Spartans (15-22).
IN THE CIRCLE
CMU starter Samantha Howell (4-6) went 1 2/3 innings in taking the loss. She allowed six runs on four hits, struck out two and walked two. Shannon Stein, Haley John and Kaitlyn Bean each pitched in relief for the Chippewas.
Leah Shipp (2-3) went 4 1/3 innings in relief for the victory.
