Targgart repeats as hammer throw champ at MAC Track & Field Championships
MUNCIE, Ind. – Central Michigan's Nadia Williams broke the program, Mid-American Conference, and facility record in winning the women's long jump on Saturday at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Ball State's University Track at Briner Sports Complex.
Williams, a junior who won the MAC indoor long jump title and earned All-America honors in March in the event, measured at 21 feet, 5 ½ inches, breaking the program mark of 20-9 she set last week.
She became the first Chippewa female to win the long jump since Maria Derezinski accomplished the feat in 2001, and she eclipsed the league mark of 21-1 ½ set in 1992 by Toledo's Candice Campbell.
CMU's Janelle Perry came in second in the long jump at 20-3 ½. Williams and Perry were the only two jumpers to clear 20 feet in the women's long jump on the day. Williams and Perry also finished one-two, respectively, at the MAC indoors.
"Their performances was absolutely necessary (to our success)," CMU director of track & field/cross country Jenny Swieton said. "It had to happen to keep us in contention. I'm excited that they came through when we needed them to."
Junior Logan Targgart posted CMU's other first place on Saturday, successfully defending his MAC title in the men's hammer throw at 201-0. CMU sophomore Connor Covert who, like Targgart, hails from Coldwater, finished third at 186-9.
"Logan had a good day, but the talk of the hammer was Connor Covert," Swieton said. "He stepped up for the men, and to (place first and third) is really cool for them."
The third and final day of the meet is scheduled for Sunday (11 a.m.).
TEAM STANDINGS
The Chippewa women are in second place with 56 points, 12 behind first-place Akron. Bowling Green (40) is third. The Chippewa men are fifth with 33 points. Kent State is first with 61, followed Akron (56).
"We had a pretty good day," Swieton said. "We had some pretty big highlights with Nadia's MAC meet, program and facility record in the long jump.
"I think overall it was a good day. It wasn't perfect, but it doesn't have to be perfect. We still have a shot, and if we're going to go down, we're going to go down swinging. We're going to go in tomorrow with guns blazing, and we're going to give it everything we have on both the men's and women's side, rack up as many points as we can, and see where that puts us. We can only control what we can do."
Other athletes who scored points for CMU were Kevin Weiler, who placed second in the men's shot put, 58-3 ¼; and Erin Howard, who placed fourth in the women's shot put, 51-4 ¼. CMU's Alexandria Robinson and April Micheaux finished in sixth and eighth, respectively, in the heptathlon.
Robinson scored 4,601 points, Micheaux finished with 4,531. Robinson placed third in the long jump, 17-8 ¾; eighth in the javelin, 83-7; and eighth in the 800 in 2:38.58. Micheaux placed ninth in the long jump, 16-6 ½; fifth in the javelin, 116-3; and 15th in the 800, 3:06.62.
