Chippewas pound out season-high 19 hits in taking series opener at Eastern
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Pat Leatherman did what a Friday starter is supposed to do.
His teammates gave him plenty of support, and then some.
Leatherman tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings and the Chippewas collected a season-high 19 hits on Friday as they topped Eastern Michigan, 11-1, in the opener of a three-game Mid-American Conference baseball series at the Eagles' Oestrike Stadium.
The win was CMU's ninth consecutive and it lifted the first-place Chippewas to 37-15 overall, 17-5 MAC. They maintain their one-game lead over Ball State, a 4-2 winner over Ohio on Friday.
The 37 victories are the most by a CMU team since the 2005 squad won 42.
"I was very pleased with how prepared our guys played today," first-year CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Leatherman was sharp again, which gave our offense a chance to build a lead and we swung the bats very well.
"We had tremendous production from the bottom part of our order, and it was great to see Jack Collins and Logan Buczkowski give us quality work out of the bullpen. We will need to be aware that Eastern will really challenge us tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Leatherman allowed just two hits and struck out four in upping his record to 8-1, tying teammate Cam Brown – who will start Saturday's game (6 p.m.) of the series – for the MAC lead in wins.
The Chippewas staked Leatherman to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the second inning, the first on David Cole's RBI triple, and the second on an Evan Kratt sacrifice fly.
Jacob Crum had a two-run double and Zavier Warren and Zach Gilles each had an RBI single as the Chippewas extended their lead to 6-0 with a four-run fourth.
Collins went 2 1/3 innings and Buczkowski worked a perfect ninth in relief of Leatherman, who lowered his earned run average to 2.36, which is second best in the MAC. The trio of Chippewa pitchers held Eastern to four hits, walked one, and struck out seven.
AT THE PLATE
Six Chippewas finished with at least two hits apiece. Warren, Crum, Cole and Kratt had three hits each, while Gilles and Griffin Lockwood-Powell each had two.
Every Chippewa starter had at least one hit, and the bottom third of the order – Cole, Kratt and Chase Rollin – finished a combined 7-for-14 and scored six runs.
The 19 hits surpassed CMU's previous season high of 18, which came in a 14-4 victory over Saint Peter's on March 5. It marked the 29th time this season CMU has finished with at least 10 hits, and it is the 11th time the Chippewas have collected 15 or more hits in a game.
Warren and Crum finished with three RBI each.
RECORD-TYING WARREN
Warren, a sophomore, had a two-run double in the fifth inning which upped CMU's lead to 8-0. It was his 21st double of the season, tying Kurtis Wells (2005) for the most in a single season in program history.
