CMU can wrap up MAC title at home this weekend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Griffin Lockwood-Powell remained red hot, as did the Central Michigan baseball team.
Lockwood-Powell matched his season high with three hits on Tuesday as the Chippewas posted their 12th consecutive victory, 10-2, over Michigan State in a nonleague game at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The win lifted CMU to 40-12 in Jordan Bischel's first year as the head coach. It marks the 10th time CMU has hit the 40-win mark in program history, and the first since it won 42 games in 2005.
BIG SERIES NEXT
The Chippewas open a three-game home Mid-American Conference series on Thursday against Miami (Ohio). CMU leads the MAC with a 19-5 league record, one game ahead of second-place Ball State. Miami is third at 15-8.
CMU is in the driver's seat in the race for the MAC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Chippewas can win their first MAC regular-season crown since 2015 this weekend.
The six-team MAC Tournament, which is scheduled to be played at Sprenger Stadium in Avon, Ohio, begins on Wednesday, May 22, though the Chippewas have clinched a top-two seed and will not play until day two of the tournament on Thursday, May 23.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas broke a 2-2 tie against Michigan State with a five-run sixth inning, and then added three more in the seventh.
The Spartans helped the Chippewas in the sixth, issuing three walks, hitting one batter, and throwing one wild pitch. All three walks came with the bases loaded. CMU had just two hits in the inning, a Lockwood-Powell lead-off single followed by a Jacob Crum infield single.
Jason Sullivan delivered a two-run triple in the seventh for the Chippewas.
LOCKWOOD-POWELL HOT
Lockwood-Powell, a sophomore, had three hits for the ninth time in a game this season. He has hit safely in 10 games of the Chippewas' 12-game win streak. He has five multi-hit games and is hitting .511 during the win streak.
ON THE MOUND
Bischel used five pitchers against the Spartans. Garrett Willis, the third Chippewa hurler, earned the victory. He surrendered one run on three hits and struck out four over 3 2/3 innings.
Jack Collins started for CMU and went three innings. Logan Buczkowski, Ian Leatherman and Grant Frazer also pitched in relief. The Chippewa pitchers combined to allow five hits, strike out 12, and walk two.
