Underwood, Stein homer in CMU's game-two win
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Central Michigan softball team split a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Toledo, falling in the opener, 3-2; and then taking the nightcap, 6-2.
The Chippewas are 11-8-1 in MAC play and are in fourth place in the league heading into their final regular-season game, which is 11 a.m. Sunday at Toledo.
Saturday's results guaranteed CMU a spot in the eight-team tournament, which is scheduled for Firestone Stadium in Akron and is slated to begin on Wednesday, May 8.
GAME 1
The Chippewas were limited to just three hits by two Toledo pitchers in the opener.
The Rockets went ahead for good, 2-1, on Megan Choate's two-out, two-run homer in the third inning.
Freshman Kaitlyn Bean (8-7) started and took the loss. She allowed three runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. Morgan Gardner doubled for CMU.
GAME 2
The Chippewas backed starter Samantha Howell with 11 hits in the nightcap.
Howell (7-8) went the distance for the victory. She allowed two runs on five hits, struck out three and walked one.
Erika Underwood hit a two-run homer to spark CMU's three-run first inning. The Chippewas never trailed after that and later got a solo homer from freshman Shannon Stein, her team-leading ninth of the season.
Underwood, Sara Hansen, Stein and Rachel Vieira finished with two apiece for CMU.
