Chippewas to face 8th-ranked Hawkeyes and Columbia this weekend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Off to its best start since 2013, the Central Michigan field hockey team will look to continue its strong start this weekend when it plays two games at Iowa's Grant Field.
The Chippewas (2-0) will take on Iowa on Friday (4 p.m.) and then will play Columbia on Saturday (3 p.m.).
The Hawkeyes, 1-1, are ranked eighth nationally. Their loss came to top-ranked North Carolina, 2-1; and their win came over 10th-ranked Wake Forest. Saturday's game is Columbia's season opener.
Rugged Road Ahead
Though the Chippewas are understandably excited about their 2-0 start, coach Catherine Ostoich has tempered that enthusiasm with the realism that it is just that, a start, and five nonconference games remain before the Mid-American Conference opener.
Three of those five are against Big Ten opponents Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State. All three of those teams are ranked.
"We still have a lot of work ahead of us," Ostoich said. "Obviously facing three Big Ten teams the next two weekends, we have our work cut out for us – we are not naïve to that. … We have a lot of things that we're going to work on."
So Far, So Good
Coming out of the opening weekend unbeaten has, obviously, given the Chippewas a shot of confidence. They outscored their two opponents, Colgate and Saint Louis, by a combined 7-1.
CMU did not total seven goals in the 2018 season until they had played 10 games.
"It helps the confidence and morale of the program so much," Ostoich said. "I think what's different this year is that we have more movement on the field. I think it's just from understanding the system better."
Reward
CMU's Alice O'Hagan made her first weekend of collegiate field hockey a memorable one. O'Hagan, a freshman from West Clandon, Surrey, England, was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals in the wins last weekend.
O'Hagan shares the league lead in goals (3), game-winning goals (2), and points (6). She leads the conference with 10 shots.
