Bringard notches game-winner in 84th minute
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Marle Bringard scored with under six minutes remaining on Friday as the Central Michigan soccer team downed Indiana State, 2-1, in a nonconference game at the CMU Soccer Complex.
It was the first victory of the season for CMU (1-0-2) and the first under first-year coach Jeremy Groves.
How It Happened
The Sycamores (0-5) scored less than three minutes into the game and maintained their 1-0 lead until Alina Miagkova tied it on an unassisted goal in the 67th minute.
Bringard, a senior midfielder from Midland, notched the game-winner in the 84th minute. It was her first goal of the season and the seventh of her career. Maria Kaschalk notched the assist, her first of the season.
"Marle, she's been a constant on the field," Groves said. "I think every game we've played this fall she's been one of the better players. I thought today she was outstanding throughout. First half she was good, second half she won balls, she was dangerous going forward and she got the winner too. Really happy for her."
Breaking Through
The Chippewas dominated the game statistically, finishing with a 25-4 advantage in shots including 11-2 in shots on goal. They held an 11-2 edge in shots at halftime, but could not break through until well into the second half.
"The first half wasn't our best half," Bringard said. "We knew that we really had to put it in gear and get going. Coming out of the locker room at halftime, we had to change our mentality and that happened. Once we scored the first goal we had a ton of momentum.
"Scoring the game-winner was nice, but it was the whole team. We all came out (in the second half) with a different mentality, so that was good."
Milestone Goal
Miagkova's goal was her first as a collegian. The junior in her first season at CMU hails from Lipetsk, Russia and is a member of the Russian National Team. She scored a goal in Russia's 4-0 victory over Estonia earlier this week in a second-round match of the qualifying tournament for the 2021 European Championship.
"She flew like 20 hours or whatever and she got back to campus on Wednesday night," Groves said. "She trained (Thursday) and she looked OK so we decided to play her. She did a good job."

Chippewa senior Zoie Reed made one save in posting the victory in goal.
