Chippewas look to turn up the offensive heat against Indiana State, IUPUI
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The home opener and Senior Day are on tap for the Central Michigan soccer team this weekend at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
The Chippewas entertain Indiana State on Friday (7 p.m.) and then welcome IUPUI on Sunday (1 p.m.). Both are nonconference games.
Friday's game is CMU's first at home under first-year coach Jeremy Groves, who has the Chippewas off to a 0-0-2 start after ties at Illinois-Chicago and at Northwestern.
CMU will recognize its four seniors, Marle Bringard, Zoie Reed, Taylor Zimmerman and Ally Viazanko, in a pregame on-field ceremony prior to Sunday's game.
The opponents
Indiana State is 0-4 after losses to Milwaukee, 2-0, and to SIU Edwardsville, 4-0, last weekend. IUPUI is 2-1-1. The Jaguars defeated Southern Illinois, 2-0, and played Western Illinois to a 0-0 tie last weekend. They are scheduled to play host to Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Looking back
Riley Mann scored the Chippewas' goal in their 1-1 tie with Northwestern. Cassidy Pettinger had an assist. The goal came in the 14th minute. The Wildcats got the equalizer in the 86th minute.
"We went to a Big Ten school last game," Groves said. "First half, we played well. We knew (that) in the second half, they were going to send the house. We withstood most of that. Once you're in a position to win against a Big Ten school, you have to see it out the last four minutes. So, we're a little disappointed in that, and it's already been a big learning step for us."
Moving forward
Groves said the Chippewas will look to turn up the offensive aggressiveness against Indiana State and IUPUI.
"I think in terms of what we're looking to improve (on) and what we've done so far this week is we've focused a lot more on going forward and attacking," he said. "This weekend, we're going to get after it and get after (the opponents). We're not going to drop numbers back, we're going to push numbers forward.
"We want to get out there and be on the front foot all weekend."
Stepping up
Reed has made 19 saves and has posted a save percentage of .950 and a goals-against average of 0.41. Her save percentage is the best among Mid-American Conference keepers as is her saves per game (9.5). Her goals-against average and her total saves rank second in the league."
"The play of Zoie has been great in goal; she's done really well," Groves said.
Next
The Chippewas are scheduled to play their final nonleague game of the season at Kentucky on Sept. 22.
Groves played at Kentucky and earned his bachelor's degree while helping lead the Wildcats to a pair of league championships in the early 2000s. While at Kentucky, Groves was coached by current Chippewa assistant Ian Collins.
Groves later joined Collins' staff at Kentucky and served as a assistant under Collins with the Wildcats from 2007-10. Collins led the Wildcat men's program for 19 years.
