Chippewa Men Drop First Home Game

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Buffalo used a strong second-half run in defeating Central Michigan, 86-67, on Saturday in a Mid-American Conference men's basketball game at McGuirk Arena.
It was the first home loss of the season for CMU, which is 10-8, 3-2 MAC. The Bulls, the two-time defending MAC Tournament champions, are 12-6, 3-2.
How It Happened
The Bulls used a 17-1 run midway through the second half, turning their 55-47 lead into a 72-48 advantage with under six minutes to play.
"They're really physical, really aggressive," CMU senior David DiLeo said. "They came out right from the tipoff, had a good game plan, took us out of our stuff, and we have to do a better job of going to an option B, or an option C.
"We didn't have a flow out there, and credit to Buffalo. We just have to find ways to keep our composure and counter when they try to do that."
Said CMU coach Keno Davis: "You saw that the most evident time of our disruption was at the start of the game and the start of the second half. Sometimes that's just the way the game is played, sometimes that's the way it's called, and you have to kind of settle in. Part of (our downfall) is a part of the learning process, but we have to get better from it. The next time we step out and play a team that does what Buffalo did today, we'll be prepared to take advantage of that style of play."
Team Stats
CMU made 34.2 percent of its field goal attempts and was five for 22 (22.7 percent) from 3-point range. Buffalo shot 45.2 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range.
Buffalo outrebounded the Chippewas, 50-42.
Individual Leaders
DiLeo led the Chippewas with 17 points and a season-high nine rebounds.
He hit three of his five 3-point attempts, giving him 299 career triples. He needs seven to tie Josh Kozinski as the program's career leader. Kozinski made 306 from long range from 2013-18.
Travon Broadway Jr. and Deschon Winston each added 11 points for the Chippewas.
Week Off
The next time CMU will take the floor is Saturday, Jan. 25 (4:30 p.m.) when it entertains Ball State. The Cardinals defeated Miami (Ohio), 71-62, on Saturday to improve to 11-7. They lead the MAC West at 4-1, while the Chippewas, at 3-2, are one game back.
"Players are pretty quick to be able to turn the page," Davis said. "I think what we're going to do first is take a few days off. The rest and recovery is going to be important. It's not going to be necessarily a week of two-a-day practices, but a couple days off, followed by some conditioning, so that we're ready to go for the rest of the season.
"The offensive and defensive execution can really improve. Not only do we have a talented team, we have guys who want to learn, and want to get better."
CMU senior Rob Montgomery said a week off should help the Chippewas recharge their batteries and refocus.
"(This week) is about getting back to being ourselves," he said. "We came out today, and we didn't have the energy or the aggressiveness that we usually have; that got us that road win against Toledo (on Tuesday). I think our main focus this week is getting back to being ourselves and playing hard, no matter what it is."
