CMU to open at No.25-ranked Michigan
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A shorter schedule, but no less challenging.
The Central Michigan women's basketball team released its 2020-21 schedule today, and it includes a rugged four-game nonconference slate that begins with a trip to 25th-ranked Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 25 (12:30 p.m.).
The Chippewas are also slated to make trips to Dayton (Dec. 6, 2 p.m.) and to Michigan State (Dec. 18, tipoff TBA), and are scheduled to entertain Cincinnati in their home opener on Dec. 12 (noon).
"We are excited to put on our uniforms and compete again," second-year coach Heather Oesterle said. "Our schedule is tough, but will again prepare us for our conference season. We recruit players who want an opportunity to play this type of schedule and we are looking forward to next week."
Due to the recent State of Michigan Health Department order, currently no fans are allowed to attend games in McGuirk Arena. If that order is lifted, CMU Athletics is only allowing student-athlete and coach guests to attend games.
CMU begins its quest for a fifth-consecutive Mid-American Conference championship at home on Dec. 15 against Miami (Ohio). That tips off a 20-game league slate with potential key home games against Ohio (Jan. 16), Buffalo (Jan. 30) and Ball State (Feb. 3).
The Chippewas were picked to win the MAC regular-season and tournament titles in the preseason coaches poll, which was released earlier this week. The Bobcats finished second in the poll, while Ball State was third and Buffalo was fourth.
CMU is a combined 123-40 since the beginning of the 2015-16 season, including 77-13 in MAC play. CMU has reached postseason play in each of those five seasons, including berths in the NCAA Tournament in each of the past three seasons.
Michigan finished 21-11 including 10-8 in the Big Ten last season. The Wolverines have won at least 20 games in each of the last nine seasons.
Dayton, one of the top mid-major programs in the nation, went 25-8 last season and won the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament titles. The Chippewas defeated the Flyers, 81-80, in overtime in Mount Pleasant last season.
Cincinnati posted a 22-10 mark in 2019-20 and went 11-5 in the American Athletic Conference. The Bearcats finished second in the league behind UConn.
Michigan State, which is coached by former CMU great Suzy Merchant, finished 16-14 including 9-9 in the Big Ten last season. The last time the two programs met, the Spartans pulled out an 88-87 victory in a first-round NCAA Tournament game in 2019.
