JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Jordan Patty and Ian Leatherman teamed up to spin a three-hit gem in the nightcap on Saturday as the Central Michigan baseball team topped Jacksonville State, 1-0, to earn a split of a nonleague doubleheader at the Gamecocks' JSU Stadium.
Jacksonville State won the opener, 8-0. The teams are scheduled to play the third game of the four-game series on Sunday (2 p.m.).
Game 2
Patty, a junior right-hander, allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out four over 7 2/3 innings for his second win in as many starts. Leatherman, a sophomore right-hander, went the final 1 1/3 innings for his first save.
"Jordan pitched tremendously in game 2 to help us bounce back and we played great defense behind him," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said.
The Chippewas scored the game's lone run in the sixth inning when Zach Gilles walked, moved to second on a Griffin Lockwood-Powell single, and took third on a Chase Rollin bunt. He scored on a Garrett Navarra groundout.
Leatherman relieved Patty with a runner at second and two out in the eighth. He got a strikeout to end the inning. Leatherman surrendered a one-out single in the ninth, and then snuffed out the threat by getting a grounder and a strikeout to end it.
Patty, the reigning Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, has not allowed a run in his two starts, covering 14 2/3 innings. He has surrendered just three hits, struck out 10, and has held opposing hitters to a .065 batting average.
Game 1
The Chippewas managed nine hits, all singles, but could not capitalize as Jacksonville State played error-free defense and turned four double plays.
"For whatever reason, we were not sharp in game 1 today," Bischel said. "Jacksonville State is a well-coached and very talented team and took advantage of our mistakes."
The Gamecocks built a 5-0 lead through five innings on CMU starter Cam Brown (0-1), who allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out three.
Navarra and Clayton Brock each pitched in relief.
Zavier Warren led the Chippewas with three hits in game two, while Zach Heeke had two hits in the twinbill.
