MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Freshman Zach Lechnir drove in the go-ahead run and Chippewa pitching was outstanding for the second-consecutive game as the CMU baseball team topped Jacksonville State, 2-1, in 11 innings on Sunday at the Gamecocks' JSU Stadium.
The Chippewas (5-2) won Saturday's game, 1-0, as Jordan Patty and Ian Leatherman combined on a three-hitter.
On Sunday, CMU's J.T. Rogoszewski, Grant Frazer and Cam Miller teamed up to limit JSU to six hits and the Chippewas backed them with error-free defense.
"J.T., Grant and Cam did a tremendous job of attacking the strike zone today and our defense responded with their best performance of the season thus far," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said.
The fourth and final game of the series is scheduled for Monday (3 p.m.).
How It Happened
Griffin Lockwood-Powell singled with two out in the 11th. Lockwood-Powell moved to second on an error and scored on Lechnir's single to left field, giving CMU a 2-1 lead.
Miller, a 6-foot-10 junior right-hander, surrendered a pair of singles in the bottom of the 11th and then induced a game-ending flyout, stranding the potential tying run at third.
CMU got its first run of the game on a Zach Gilles two-out RBI triple in the sixth.
On the Mound
Rogoszewski started and went 5 2/3 innings. He allowed one run on four hits, struck out two and walked two.
Frazer relieved in the bottom of the sixth and got an inning-ending strikeout, stranding a runner at third to keep the game tied 1-1. Frazer pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings, striking out three.
Miller (2-0) walked one, struck out one and allowed two hits over the final two frames for the win.
At the Plate
Lechnir and Gilles finished with two hits apiece. CMU collected seven hits against four JSU pitchers.
"Jacksonville State's pitchers were excellent, but we were able to hit more balls hard as the game went on," Bischel said. "It was great to see one find a hole in the 11th."
