Chippewas to play Arizona, Rhode Island this week
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team will travel to Tucson, Ariz. this week to play four games, two with Arizona and two with Rhode Island, at the Wildcats' Hi Corbett Field.
The Chippewas will begin tonight against Arizona (8 p.m.) before facing both teams in a doubleheader on Friday, Rhode Island at 3 p.m. and then Arizona at 8 p.m. CMU's week concludes on Saturday (noon) against Rhode Island.
The Chippewas are 5-2 after series wins versus UNLV and Jacksonville State to begin the season. They won two out of three games against Jacksonville State after the series finale was cancelled due to rain.
Stellar Arms, Quiet Bats
The Chippewas scored just three total runs and were shut out once in their three games at Jacksonville State. The Chippewas scored eight or more runs in each of their four games in their season-opening series at UNLV.
Still, they managed to win two out of the three games against Jacksonville State on the strength of impressive pitching from starters and the bullpen.
CMU ranked ninth in base on balls and 27th in hits among the nation following an opening series which saw them average 10 runs per game. Those rankings have dipped to 33rd and 97th, respectively, after a quiet offensive series against Jacksonville State. The Chippewas averaged just one run per game in the three against the Gamecocks.
Pitching Leaders
CMU junior right-hander Jordan Patty has yet to allow a run in two starts this season. He tossed 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball against Jacksonville State and he is at the top of multiple MAC leaderboards following his stellar start.
Patty leads the conference in earned run average (0.00), opponent batting average (.065), innings pitched (14 2/3), and hits allowed (3). His 2-0 record ties him for the league lead in wins.
CMU's J.T. Rogoszewski is fifth in the conference in opposing batting average (.206) while ranking ninth among MAC pitchers with seven hits allowed. Cameron Brown is tied for eighth in the conference with 10 strikeouts.
Grant Frazer and Ian Leatherman are among nine MAC pitchers to record a save this year, tallying one apiece.
Hitting Leaders
A quiet offensive weekend resulted in many CMU hitters falling off the MAC early-season leaderboards. The Chippewas have no hitters ranked top 10 in batting average, slugging percentage or on-base percentage.
Zach Gilles is eighth in the MAC with 10 hits and eighth in RBI with eight. CMU's Chase Rollin has also tallied eight RBI this season. CMU shortstop Zavier Warren, an All-American last season, has drawn seven walks and is tied for fifth in the conference in that category.
Scouting
Arizona is 5-2 with losses to Iowa and Minnesota. Rhode Island is 2-4, stealing one win each in series against Lamar and Maryland.
The Wildcats are fourth in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings, averaging 13.2 per. They are 17th in the nation with a .494 slugging percentage. Their offensive attack is led by Ryan Holgate, whose .519 batting average and 14 hits puts him 19th and 25th in the nation, respectively.
Rhode Island has hit five home runs as a team, all of them coming from two players, Xavier Vargas (three) and Jackson Coutts (two).
