Gardner, Knapp homer in loss to 19th-ranked Bulldogs
ATHENS, Ga. – The Central Michigan softball team continued its weekend at the 17th Annual Georgia Classic at the Bulldogs' Turner Stadium on Saturday, dropping a pair of games.
The Chippewas fell to No. 19 Georgia, 7-4, and then to Austin Peay, 3-1.
CMU (1-8) split with the same two teams on Friday, defeating Austin Peay, 4-3, and falling to Georgia, 0-8. The Chippewas are scheduled to wrap up the weekend on Sunday (10:30 a.m.) when they take on No. 21 James Madison (5-3). Georgia is 13-3, Austin Peay is 4-6.
"We talk about winning every inning," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "We've got to keep it simple, work to win every pitch, and try and win as many innings as we can."
The Chippewas totaled five hits on the day, three against Georgia and two against Austin Peay.
"Five hits isn't exactly where we want to be at to win games, but there were a couple of big hits," Salmon said.

Two of the Chippewas' three hits against the Bulldogs (13-3) were two-run homers, the first a third-inning shot by senior Morgan Gardner, and the second a fifth-inning blast by junior Shaidan Knapp.
Gardner's homer gave CMU a 2-0 lead. It was her second-career round-tripper and her first since her freshman season, 2017.
"Mo's one of our veterans on this team," Salmon said. "It was nice to see her get that big run, and get the bats going and spark our offense."
Georgia answered with four runs in the bottom of the third and added one in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.
Knapp's homer, the fifth of her career, drew CMU to 5-4, but the Chippewas could not get any closer as they stranded two base runners in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bean (1-3) went the distance in taking the loss. She allowed 11 hits, walked two and struck out one.
Winning pitcher Lauren Mathis (5-0) struck out 13.
Vs. Austin Peay
The Chippewas scored their lone run on freshman Skylar Coberley's fourth-inning RBI single.
Sophomore Haley John (0-3) took the loss, allowing four hits and walking two over four innings. Cloe Mallory pitched the final two frames for the Chippewas. She surrendered one run on two hits and struck out one.
"Our pitching looked better today," Salmon said, "It was the best we've seen them so far."
Shelby Harpe (3-4) struck out four in going the distance for the win.
