CMU heads to Florida for spring break beginning March 6
ATHENS, Ga. -- The Central Michigan softball team closed its weekend at the 17th annual Georgia Classic on Sunday with an 8-0 loss to No. 21 James Madison at Georgia's Turner Stadium.
The Chippewas wrap up the weekend 1-4. They won their first game of the season on Friday when they defeated Austin Peay, 4-3.
"When you play high-caliber teams you have to play at a high level," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "Just getting experience and learning from experiences in these games is huge for us. Heading into the break, this week of rest will be key for us to recover and make some adjustments."
The Chippewas (1-9) will head to the sunny state of Florida where they will play 11 games in eight days in Madeira Beach. They will kick off their spring break trip on March 6 against Loyola.
The Chippewas managed just two hits, a Caitlyn Britton double and a Samantha Mills single, on Sunday against James Madison (6-3). It was Britton's first career hit.
The Dukes scored two runs in the first inning, three in the third and ended it on the run rule with a three-run homer by Hannah Shifflett in the fifth.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bean (1-4) gave up five runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out one over three innings in taking the loss. Cloe Mallory and Britton both pitched in relief for CMU.
Alexis Bermundez (1-0) struck out three in going the distance for the win.
