MADIERA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Kaitlyn Bean threw a complete-game three-hitter on Friday as the Central Michigan softball team opened its spring break trip with a 4-3 victory over Loyola at the ROC Softball Complex.
The Chippewas dropped their second game of the day, 12-4, to Florida Gulf Coast.
CMU (2-10) is scheduled to play Iowa and St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The Chippewas and the Hawkeyes (14-4) square off at 2 p.m., and CMU will play St. Bonaventure (2-3) at 4:30 p.m.
Vs. Loyola
Bean (2-4) struck out two and walked two in leading the Chippewas past Loyola.
"Bean did a good job of putting us in a position to make plays," first-year CMU coach McCall Salmon said "It was nice to see her go the distance.
"This is probably the best we've played to date. I thought we showed a lot of great things. It starts with the first inning (Saturday). I'm excited to see what we have (Saturday)."
Freshman Emily Bracamonte got the bats going for the Chippewas with a second-inning RBI single, tying the game 1-1. It was Bracamonte's first career RBI.
Down 3-1, the Chippewas scored three runs in the third to take the lead for good. A Tala Dean RBI double drew CMU to 3-2, and then the Chippewas took advantage of a walk and a Loyola error to score two runs.
Pitching with a one-run lead, Bean set down the Ramblers in order in the fourth and fifth innings, and then worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, getting a popup and a strikeout to end the threat. She retired the Ramblers in order in the seventh.
CMU collected five hits off of losing pitcher Sydney Ruggles (5-2), who went four innings. She walked four.
Vs. Florida Gulf Coast
The Eagles got a two-run double in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead, and then blew the game open with a five-run fifth. The Eagles added three more in the sixth to end the game on the run rule.
The Chippewas got a two-run double from sophomore Samantha Mills and Tala Dean finished with two hits and drove in a run. Dean, a junior, had three hits on the day, giving her a team-high nine on the season and raising her average to .290.
"Tala's been of our most consistent hitters," Salmon said. "Her continuing that consistency and attacking pitches when we need her to, that was exciting."
Junior Cloe Mallory (0-3) started for CMU and took the loss. She allowed nine runs on eight hits, struck out four, and walked one over five innings. Shannon Stein pitched in relief.
Morgan Gardner also doubled for CMU, which matched its season high with eight hits. Emily Estroff (1-0) earned the win in relief.
