MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team is headed to the Sunshine State for spring break.
CMU is scheduled to play 11 games in eight days, beginning with two on Friday, March 6, the first against Loyola (9 a.m.) and the second against Florida Gulf Coast (11:30 a.m.). All of the Chippewas' games will be in Madeira Beach.
The Chippewas are also scheduled to play Iowa, St. Bonaventure, Quinnipiac, Creighton, Merrimac, Indiana and South Dakota State on their trip.
Last Time Out
Central Michigan finished 1-4 at the Georgia Classic two weeks ago. They split a pair of games with Austin Peay and then lost two to No. 19 Georgia and one to No. 21 James Madison.
"After having last weekend off and getting some quality practice in, we're looking forward to getting a chance to compete and to see how much improvement we've made since last time we were on the field," first-year CMU coach McCall Salmon said.
The Chippewas are 1-9 under Salmon, who replaced legendary Margo Jonker when Jonker retired after the 2019 season, her 40th in charge of the program.
Not only did the program welcome a new coach, but it has sought to replace a slew of veteran mainstays who graduated in 2019. It has been a feeling-out process for all, including several newcomers along with less-experienced returnees and the new coaching staff.
"We were able to get outside on the dirt a little bit," Salmon said. "Working on attacking off-speed pitches and making sure we're swinging at strikes and staying on time."
Freshman Gisele Acuna leads the Chippewas with a .278 batting average, while junior Tala Dean is hitting .240. Acuna, senior Morgan Gardner and junior Shaidan Knapp each have homered. Gardner leads the Chippewas with four RBI.
In the Circle
All five pitchers – Caitlyn Britton, Shannon Stein, Kaitlyn Bean, Cloe Mallory and Samantha Howell -- on the CMU roster have appeared in at least one game this season.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bean has made a team-high six appearances, starting four of them. She leads the Chippewas in innings pitched, 24 2/3, and in strikeouts, 14.
