CMU Men Fall At Miami
2/27/2020 10:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
OXFORD, Ohio – Miami (Ohio) used an early surge to put Central Michigan into a hole on Thursday and the RedHawks went on to a 76-57 victory over the Chippewas in a Mid-American Conference men's basketball game at the RedHawks' Millett Hall.
The loss was CMU's seventh straight and it left the Chippewas 13-15, 6-9 MAC. The Chippewas are tied for seventh place in the overall MAC standings. CMU has three regular-season games to play before the MAC Tournament.
The Chippewas go to Eastern Michigan on Saturday (noon). The Eagles are 15-13, 5-10.
"You can't be worried about how many wins you have in a row, or how many losses you have in a row," CMU coach Keno Davis said. "You have to understand, with three games left, we have a lot to play for. We know that hosting a (first-round tournament) game gives you a lot better chance to be able to win the conference tournament."
How It Happened
Miami used a 20-6 run that started with an Isaiah Coleman-Lands 3-pointer with just over nine minutes to play in the first half, putting the RedHawks in front, 19-17. A Milos Jovic triple with under five minutes left put Miami up 13, 36-23.
The Chippewas pulled to within eight, 39-31, early in the second half, but another Jovic 3-pointer put Miami back in front by double digits, and the Chippewas never got closer than nine the rest of the way.
"We've been saying all year long the difference between the top team and bottom team in this league is not much," Davis said. "We've played well this year, we've struggled at times.
"But it's been a long time since we've seen the lack of effort we had in the first half. I commend our guys for trying to flip the switch and bring energy. But games are 40 minutes; you can't play them for 20 minutes. It's just not good enough to win whether you're at home or on the road."
Key Numbers
The RedHawks hit 11 of their 22 3-point attempts while holding the Chippewas to a 4-for-17 performance from beyond the arc. Miami outrebounded the Chippewas, 44-31.
Leader
Rob Montgomery scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Chippewas.
