MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Athletics has named the Chippewa gymnastics program as the Dick Enberg Team Leadership Award winner for 2019.
The Team Leadership Award is presented to a Chippewa program that best meets five criteria: overall grade-point average, academic progress rate, community service, athletic performance, and commitment to excellence.
The award is named in honor of the late Dick Enberg, CMU's most-famous alum and legendary sports broadcaster.
It marks the fourth time that the gymnastics program has been the recipient in the 14-year history of the award.
"This is truly a great honor and privilege to be the recipients of this prestigious award," coach Christine MacDonald said. "Having had the opportunity to meet and spend time with Mr. Enberg, it means a great deal to me and our team, because of the passion he had for this university. Our coaching staff is committed to the personal development of each individual both in and out of the gym. Receiving this award, in at least one way, validates the efforts and commitment of our team in all of these areas."
MacDonald's Chippewas excelled by every measure on which the award is based.
They compiled a 3.608 cumulative team grade point average in 2018-19 and posted a perfect 1000 score on the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate. Nine Chippewas were named Academic All-MAC and nine received Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Scholastic All-America honors.
The Chippewas went unbeaten in Mid-American Conference duals to claim the league title and earned their 11th-consecutive NCAA Regional berth.
CMU's Denelle Pedrick was named the MAC Gymnast of the Year and Morgan Tong earned the MAC Freshman of the Year Award.
CMU Gymnastics also amassed an impressive resumé of community service, volunteering with organizations such as Little League and Habitat for Humanity, and taking active participation in the Mount Pleasant schools' Lunch Buddies program and the Chippewas' Gym School.
"Being good stewards of service and active community members is also very important to our team and part of the fabric of our program," MacDonald said. "It is a privilege to be a Chippewa and a member of this community. The connections we make within the community bring purpose and joy to our team, outside of competing in gymnastics."
