Stencel (4th), Hildebrandt (6th) among 4 CMU wrestlers in national rankings
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling team is ranked 18th and four Chippewas are ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes in WIN Magazine's Preseason Tournament Power Index and Rankings.
The TPI is an accumulation of potential national tournament points that are associated with individual wrestler's rankings in WIN's preseason poll.
The Chippewas garnered 24.5 points to place 18th in the poll. No. 1 Iowa has 114 points, followed by Michigan (72.5), Cornell (68), Oklahoma State (56) and Nebraska (52.5). CMU is the second Mid-American Conference team in the rankings behind No. 15 Missouri (26).
Four Chippewas, three of whom were All-Americans in 2019, are ranked individual.
Matt Stencel (285 pounds) is the highest-ranked individual at fourth, while Drew Hildebrandt (125) is ranked sixth. CMU's Dresden Simon (141) is ranked 12th and Andrew Marten (133) is 20th.
Stencel and Hildebrandt were both named First Team All-America last season by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Simon earned second-team recognition. Stencel, Hildebrandt and Simon are seniors, while Marten is a junior.
Hildebrandt, Stencel and Simon won their respective weight classes in leading the Chippewas to a solid runner-up finish last March at the MAC Championships. All three, along with Marten and teammates Logan Parks and Landon Pelham, earned a bid to the NCAA Championships that were cancelled due to COVID-19.
All-America honors were awarded by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
The 2021 NCAA Championships are scheduled for March 18-20 in St. Louis.
