Record-Setting Quiara Wheeler Earns Weekly MAC Award

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan's Quiara Wheeler was named the Mid-American Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week for track & field after her performance in the Chippewas' season opening dual on Saturday against Western Michigan.

Wheeler, a senior from Flint, shattered her own CMU indoor weight throw record with a meet-winning toss of 20.74 meters in the Chippewas' win over the Broncos at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track.

Wheeler bettered her former mark, 19.75 meters, by nearly a meter. Converted to feet and inches, Wheeler's throw on Saturday covered 68 feet, ½ inch; her former program-best throw was 64-9 ¾. She set that last season in finishing third at the MAC Championships.

Wheeler's toss ties for the fifth best in the nation this season. Wheeler also holds the CMU outdoor record (63.01 meters) in the hammer throw.
