ALLENDALE, Mich. – Quiara Wheeler won the weight throw to lead the Central Michigan women's track & field on Saturday at the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Alumni Open at the Lakers' Kelly Family Sports Center.
Wheeler's winning toss measured 20.73 meters, more than 1.4 meters longer than that of the runner-up. Wheeler's throw was just shy of her program record 20.74-meter toss in last weekend's season-opening dual with Western Michigan at CMU's Jack Skoog Indoor Track.
Wheeler led a dominant performance by CMU in the event. The Chippewas' Marissa Dunn placed fourth (19.09), Maya Bennett (18.50) was fifth, and Mohogany Wells (18.23) was sixth.
"Quiara had a really good performance to back up what she did last week, which was huge," CMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said. "It's almost like her doing so well encourages everybody else to step up their game. I think across the board all the throwers threw really, really well; lots of PRs. The throwers got us started in a really big way."
CMU's Erin Howard placed second in the shot put with a throw of 14.98 meters. It was one of the three second-place finishes by Chippewa student-athletes on the day as Emma Fountain was second in the 400-meter run (57.30 seconds) and Hayley Manners was second in the long jump (5.53 meters).
CMU's Kaitlynn Rush placed fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.72 seconds) and Annie Laurenz was fourth in the 400 (59.85). The Chippewas' Emma Francis finished fifth in the 400 (1:00.11), Madi Mandelke was fifth in the 800 (2:19.72), and Sarah Daniel was fifth in the long jump (5.24 meters).
CMU sixths: Peyton Korytkowski, 60 hurdles, 9.10; Kasey Staley, pole vault, 3.75 meters. CMU sevenths: Reghan Draper, 60 dash, 7.77; Alexa Davis, 800, 2:23.22; Emily Paupore, 3,000, 9:57.15; Lindsey Clarke, high jump, 1.37 meters.
"They're really starting to compete and just trying to beat as many people as they can and that's what we need right now," Swieton said. "Good times and marks will come if you just compete. We had a lot of PRs across all the events and we competed really, really well today and that makes me happy."
